3 Must-Know Treatments for Acne Scars

3 Must-Know Treatments for Acne Scars

You finally got rid of the pimples, but everywhere you go, the evidence of your battle with acne is all over your face.

Acne scars are frustrating — perhaps just as much as the breakouts that preceded them. But the good news is you’re not stuck with them forever. They may be tough to treat, but Dr. Chinyere Orafu and our Ohio Laser & Wellness Center team have an extensive lineup of treatments that address your scars and improve your skin’s health.

Here’s a closer look at our top three.

1. Chemical peels

Chemical peels entail using a chemical solution on your skin. The chemicals break down and remove the outer layers of your skin to minimize the appearance of acne scars, enlarged pores, pigmentation problems, wrinkles, and other skin texture flaws.

We offer three chemical peels: light, medium, and deep.

For acne scars, we typically recommend either a medium or deep peel. These peels penetrate deeper into the skin than a light peel and are more potent, which also means they affect the skin more aggressively.

Expect to peel for 3-6 days after a medium peel and up to two weeks after a deep peel. We walk you through what to expect following treatment and how to care for your skin as it heals.

2. Fractional CO2 lasers

With fractional CO2 laser treatments, we send pulses of laser light into the deepest layers of your skin to disrupt the layers where your scars lie. This process promotes the production of skin cells and collagen fibers, leaving your skin firmer and smoother.

Fractional laser treatments create “columns” of damage rather than all-over damage, which reduces the disruption to the surrounding skin and decreases side effects.

3. Microneedling

Want to break up scar tissue and rebuild healthy skin tissue? Microneedling is one of the best treatments. With microneedling, we use tiny needles to puncture your skin and send your body into healing mode.

Your body responds by creating collagen and elastin, which make your skin appear smoother and firmer and ultimately reduce the appearance of scars.

But we don’t stop there.

You can take microneedling treatments a step further and opt for Secret RF microneedling. The process is virtually the same, but we follow the needles with pulses of radiofrequency (RF) energy to even more collagen production.

That is not all

We’ve highlighted three of our go-to acne scar treatments, but we offer many other treatments that are as effective or work as perfect complements. Talk to us about how laser skin rejuvenation, dermaplaning, Dr. Orafu-approved skin care products, and even Botox® and fillers can improve your skin health and reduce the appearance of acne scars.

What else can I do?

Acne scars are stubborn and rarely go away without help from professionals like Dr. Orafu, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play an active role in your treatment plan.

This treatment involves establishing a solid skin care routine (with our recommended products and procedures) to manage active breakouts and prevent further damage to your skin. Also, avoid picking, popping, and otherwise messing with your pimples to prevent skin damage.
