Chemical Peels and Microneedling Q & A
What is a chemical peel?
When our patients are treated with a chemical peel, we uses a chemical solution that causes the skin to exfoliate and eventually fall off, leaving fresh, new skin in its place. Because the chemical peel reduces damaged skin cells, the new skin is smoother and has fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels can also:
- Improve skin’s texture
- Reduce acne
- Shrink enlarged pores
- Decrease pigmentation
Dr. Orafu offers three different kinds of chemical peels, each with greater levels of potency. A light peel requires no downtime and only makes skin appear dry, with minimal peeling. It’s effective for reducing fine lines, acne, and slight pigmentation.
A medium peel has effects that last longer and go deeper into the skin than the effects of the light peel. The medium peel helps to treat acne scars, wrinkles, and dark pigmentation. With this peel, you can expect the skin to peel for three to six days.
For maximum results, you can opt for a deep peel. Penetrating the deepest layers of the skin, this procedure can treat scars, deep wrinkles, and dark pigmentations. It causes the skin to peel for two weeks and can take up to two months for the skin to completely heal.
How do you prepare for a chemical peel at the Ohio Laser & Wellness Centers?
Because chemical peels deeply exfoliate your skin, there are certain things you should avoid as you prepare for one. Avoid tanning beds and sun exposure for four weeks before your treatment, and don’t exfoliate or use exfoliating products for three to five days. You should also protect your skin with a 30 SPF sunscreen.
After your treatment, you need to take care of your skin as it heals. Avoid using exfoliating products for at least one week and stay out of the sun for four weeks. If you’re going to be outside, use sunscreen and wear a hat. Be sure not to pick at your peeling skin because, for optimal benefits, it should come off on its own.
How does microneedling improve skin?
While you can use microneedling all over your body, it probably does its most effective work on your face. Dr. Orafu uses a device with 12 small needles to puncture the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. This boosts the production of collagen and elastin, creating a face that looks fresh and young. Microneedling can improve the appearance of:
- Acne
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Loose skin
- Uneven texture
- Enlarged pores
