Struggling with Acne? Find Out More About Microneedling

Acne is one of those unfortunate rites of passage most of us must endure, but it’s also supposed to have an end date.
Once you leave puberty, breakouts become even more frustrating and, let’s be honest, embarrassing.
That’s where Dr. Chinyere Orafu and our team of experts at the Ohio Laser & Wellness Center come in. We’re proud to offer a variety of skincare and aesthetic treatments that address all sorts of issues, including acne.
Here’s a closer look at how one of our most popular treatments can help you tackle your most infuriating skin issue.
Where does acne come from?
You can try to blame your diet or habits, but acne comes from excess oil production in your skin. Your lifestyle and skin care play a role, but the driving force behind your breakouts is primarily biological.
Here’s how it happens:
The sebaceous glands in your skin overproduce an oily substance called sebum. Standard amounts of sebum act like a natural moisturizer; however, too much of it can wreak havoc.
Dead skin cells, dirt, and other junk mix with the sebum and eventually plug hair follicles. Bacteria grow inside the plugged follicle, triggering an inflammatory response and, ultimately, the acne you know and hate.
Acne is most common in the areas where your skin has the most oil glands (your face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders).
Some factors that contribute to or exacerbate your acne include:
- A poor diet
- Hormonal fluctuations
- Certain medications
- Unmanaged stress
- Friction or pressure on your skin
- Using greasy or oily products
- Using skin care products with harsh cleansers and chemicals
Despite what you may believe, hygiene and cosmetics have minimal effect on acne. These days, most makeup is noncomedogenic (doesn’t clog pores), and constantly cleaning a seemingly dirty face can negatively affect your skin.
How can microneedling help?
If you’re constantly battling acne and sick of cycling through prescription products and at-home hacks, you’re in the right place.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that creates micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen production. It may also affect the sebaceous glands and reduce oil overproduction.
Many of our patients also see us for microneedling after a breakout when acne scars crop up. The tiny injuries that microneedling creates help your skin break down scar tissue and rebuild healthier skin in its place.
More on microneedling
Acne and acne scars aren’t the only thing microneedling can address. We recommend microneedling treatments for a wide range of skin issues, including:
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Skin elasticity issues
- Uneven skin tone
- Stretch marks
Microneedling works well with other treatments and procedures, such as Botox® and fillers. We thoroughly evaluate your skin and discuss your treatment goals before matching you with the perfect treatment(s).
When can I start?
Microneedling is an excellent option for many patients, but we want to get the timing right. We don’t recommend microneedling treatments when an active acne breakout happens because the needles will pick up and distribute the bacteria in your pimples.
So, you likely need to wait until there’s a pause in your breakouts.
In the meantime, we can discuss your other options to help control your acne, including our suite of recommended skin care products and chemical peels.
